Illustrating water safety in a fun, approachable way.

Making water safety easy to understand and approachable to kids through the use of cheerful illustrations and diagrams was the primary goal of this project. Character styles were provided, and the illustrations were intended to situate these characters within environments that would require awareness to water safety.

Children were encouraged to spot both the safety features and safety hazards of each setting (hotel pool, river, waterfront). These illustrations were used as an educational tool, in an activity workbook. Materials were carefully reviewed for accurate portrayal of safety features, ensuring accurate representation of communication objectives.

Communicating safety messaging to kids.

A primary objective of this project was to communicate water safety hazards to kids, in a clear but approachable way. Balancing a fun, approachable tone, with illustrations of the dangers of swimming took some careful consideration. The final result featured a balance of both, supporting children’s understanding of water safety and raising awareness.

In the end, these materials were used in a workbook for kids, distributed as educational materials to be used in swim programs across Alberta and the NWT.
