First Aid Safety Manual Illustrations
Illustrating a first aid safety manual with medical illustrations, to be used in educational material and training resources across Canada.
In 2022, I worked with the Lifesaving Society of Alberta + the Northwest Territories to develop more than +130 safety illustrations to be used in a First Aid Safety Manual. These illustrations were designed to act as an educational tool, in training individuals on first aid safety. Each illustration went through multiple revisions to ensure accuracy of the techniques pictured, and anatomical correctness. The final book was printed in May 2024, and was carefully reviewed and evaluated by an M.D. to high acclaim; noted and praised for its comprehensiveness and medical accuracy. The illustrations were designed for clarity and comprehension, and to follow a standardized, approachable, and cohesive style.

Developing an illustration style, project managing 100+ files with revisions, and achieving nuanced communication goals.
Illustrations were based on composite reference photos, and were drawn in the Illustrator app program on an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. A versatile colour palette was established and maintained, along with a visual system to unify the illustrations. Bold outer borders on each illustration grounded the outer form, and thin interior lines provided dimensions to each illustrated subject. This system offered visual consistency across the project.
Each illustration went through rounds of approvals and revisions, and had specific communication goals in mind (such as correct hand positioning for lifts, or sequencing for how-to safety protocols). As a result, each illustration, although simple, contained a great deal of intention and detail.
The project management of this project was a significant task and was of note, in managing more than +100 illustration files, along with rounds of edits and revisions. Google Drive folders were established, and clear communications over email correspondence (along with a colour coded Google Sheets spreadsheet to track progress) supported the development of this project, and the management of the illustrations.
